The Fountain of Youth Discovered! - By Seth Prezant PDF Print E-mail

It started a few years ago when I noticed a feather like line running from the outside corner of my eye eastward. A grey hair growing where a single black hair once resided exposed itself to me a few months later. Since then a series of “man, your hitting forty” signs have been popping up and falling out. I am aging.

Determined to slow down the aging process I committed myself to eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and soy products. I bicycle nearly every morning and lift weight three times a week. I have lost some weight and I feel a little better but the lines and grays and unwanted hairs keep appearing. Is there a fountain of youth?

Now my seven year old keeps me on my feet. He is what people call an “active boy” and enjoys things most primates enjoy: Climbing trees, jumping on things, playing with sticks, taking things apart (and not putting them back together), eating bananas, making grunting and screeching noises, looking for bugs, and spinning around and around and around. “Would you stop spinning,” pleaded my wife, “you are making me dizzy!” Feeling wounded, my son looked to me for comfort. So I did what any good father should do. I started spinning too. The two of us spun around and around with our arms stretched out until we collided and fell and cackled liked two monkeys in the zoo. And it felt good.

I went upstairs to get something out of my bedroom and when I passed the mirror I looked at myself. Now maybe I was still a little dizzy from all that spinning and my eyes weren’t yet adjusted, but I swear, the lines were gone.

Here are some tips on discovering your own fountain of youth. Next time your child wants to climb a tree climb it with him. When your daughter wants to hunt for bugs in the backyard ask if you can join in the adventure. Jump on beds with your children in the morning, spit watermelon seeds into a glass, lay upside down and let the blood rush to your head, and spin! Not a little twirl. Spin like a child. And as you turn around and around the aging clock too will turn back and you will find yourself looking and feeling a little younger.
